Abandoned

An abandoned Air Force Base sits atop a mountain in the Northeast kingdom of Vermont.

Snow dusted evergreens stand at attention on either side of the tattered road. The wind whips and howls, swirling around lost stories that no one will ever again hear.

Peeling metal panels marred with vibrant text and shapes eerily creak and groan, while the quiet drips of water droplets fall into rusty puddles.

The sharp smell of metal and dirt stings my nose as I climb a ladder to the top of the radar tower. Magnificent mountainous views greet me.

Waning autumn sunlight dances across mountains and valleys, and I’m the only one there to witness its beauty.
